Congressman Ron Paul and Michael Scheuer educate Rudy Giuliani on American foreign policy (May 24, 2007)

The Ron Paul campaign has issued a reading list of foreign-policy books for Rudy Giuliani, after all it’s only fair that no presidential candidate be left behind in understanding foreign affairs for the next debate. They were even gracious enough to include a cheat sheet, as campaign chairman Kent Snyder said: “We have also included some Cliffs Notes in case Mr. Giuliani is too busy giving $100,000 speeches on national security.”

Giuliani did not respond personally to the gesture, but his spokesman responded via e-mail.

“It is extraordinary and reckless to claim that the United States invited the attacks on September 11th,” Maria Comella said in an e-mail.

“And to further declare Rudy Giuliani needs to be educated on September 11th when millions of people around the world saw him dealing with these terrorist attacks firsthand is just as absurd.”

Really? And I thought he was just following the cameras around to prop up his low approval rating as mayor. Maria could use some brushing up on the real world too.

Ron Paul’s speech in the House of Representatives on 5/22/07.

In the Name of Patriotism (Who are the Patriots?)

For some patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. For others, it means dissent against a government’s abuse of the peoples rights.
I have never met a politician in Washington, or any American for that matter, who chose to be called unpatriotic. Nor have I met anyone who did not believe he wholeheartedly supported our troops wherever they may be.
What I have heard all too frequently from various individuals is sharp accusations that because their political opponents disagree with them on the need for foreign military entanglements, they were unpatriotic, un-American, evildoers deserving contempt.
The original American patriots were those individuals brave enough to resist with force the oppressive power of King George. I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist oppressive state power. The true patriot is motivated by a sense of responsibility, and out of self interest—for himself, his family, and the future of his country—to resist government abuse of power. He rejects the notion that patriotism means obedience to the state.

The Past and Future are Now

By James Ostrowski

The Ron Paul campaign is the biggest thing to happen in the modern libertarian movement in fifty years. In a larger sense, his campaign is the best chance in 110 years to put a Jeffersonian in the White House. What is libertarianism but a new and improved, industrial strength Jeffersonianism?

The last Jeffersonian president was Grover Cleveland, in whose honor Free New York is founding a Presidential Library in Buffalo where he served as mayor. A lot of Hamiltonian nonsense has accumulated along the banks of the Potomac in those lean years. It’s time to take care of a lot of old business on behalf of the libertarian pioneers who kept the flame alive in those bleak years, most of whom have not lived to see this rare moment. Now is the time to honor our great past.

As for the future, history shows that opportunities like this, if not seized, may not come again for decades. To quote one of my favorites football coaches, “The future is now!”

From DownsizeDC: Take action immediately

“Here’s what’s at stake . . .

The immigration controversy, and the legislation it has spawned, has become a Trojan Horse for imposing the REAL ID Act on all Americans, and entangling all of us in a bureaucratic nightmare of apocalyptic proportions.

Think for a moment about all the problems there have been with the terrorist watch list. Think about all the innocent Americans who have been placed on this list for no discernible reason, and the trouble people have had getting off this list. Now . . .

Imagine this same kind of bureaucratic nightmare expanding to entangle every job and business in America. This is what the REAL ID provisions of the new Senate Immigration Bill (S. 2611) will bring about.”
