Ron Paul’s Texas Straight Talk Column
June 30, 2008
The most basic principle to being a free American is the notion that we as individuals are responsible for our own lives and decisions. We do not have the right to rob our neighbors to make up for our mistakes, neither does our neighbor have any right to tell us how to live, so long as we aren’t infringing on their rights. Freedom to make bad decisions is inherent in the freedom to make good ones. If we are only free to make good decisions, we are not really free.
Socialist ideologies blur this line between self reliance and government control because the mistakes of the individual are spread to everyone else. Thus the government becomes very interested in your decisions and way of life, with the justification that you could make a mistake others will have to pay for. The end result is, of course, that everyone loses privacy and control over their own lives. Whether they realize it or not, they are no longer truly free.

Hey McCain and Obama! Don Waste Your Time on Ron Paul Supporters
Filed Under Uncategorized | 1 Comment
That’s the message Earl Ofari Hutchinson has for the major party candidates in his Huffington Post article yesterday. I couldn’t agree more with that message but for the reasons Earl gives for McCain and Obama to give up on courting the Paulites…well that’s another matter.
Earl starts with the “fringe” but not so scary, but scary enough positions that strike fear into big government collectivists like Earl.
“The scary thing about Paul’s candidacy was never his fringe views on taxes, social security, abortion rights, his opposition to tough environmental regulations, tout of non-interference in state rights issues and his opposition to civil rights laws (said Paul, they actually promote bigotry by dividing Americans into race and class).”

H.L. Mencken on Congressman
Filed Under H.L. Mencken, History | 4 Comments

This essay appeared in the book “Civilization in the United States: An Inquiry by Thirty Americans” By Harold Stearns published in 1922.
This is a particularly scathing criticism of members of the House of Representatives. (just as bad if not worse today) You’ll notice Mencken’s accurate foreboding that the same was to happen to the Senate as “direct elections have not yet done their work”. There is also an excellent explanation of “the process whereby prohibition was foisted upon the nation by constitutional amendment, to the dismay of the solid majority opposed to it and to the surprise of the minority in favour of it.” (Beware those single issue lobbyists)
POLITICS
No person shall be a Representative who … shall not, when elected, be an inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.
… No person shall be a Senator who … shall not, when elected, be an inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.SPECIALISTS in political archaeology will recognize these sentences: they are from Article I, Sections 2 and 3, of the constitution of the United States. I have heard and forgotten how they got there; no doubt the cause lay in the fierce jealousy of the States. But whatever the fact, I have a notion that there are few provisions of the constitution that have had a more profound effect upon the character of practical politics in the Republic, or, indirectly, upon the general colour of American thinking in the political department. They have made steadily for parochialism in legislation, for the security and prosperity of petty local bosses and machines, for the multiplication of pocket and rotten boroughs of the worst sort, and, above all, for the progressive degeneration of the honesty and honour of representatives. They have greased the ways for the trashy and ignoble fellow who aspires to get into Congress, and they have blocked them for the man of sense, dignity, and self-respect. More, perhaps, than any other single influence they have been responsible for the present debauched and degraded condition of the two houses, and particularly of the lower one. Find me the worst ass in Congress, and I’ll show you a man they have helped to get there and to stay there. Find me the most shameless scoundrel, and I’ll show you another.

What is the importance of the war in Iraq relative to other current issues? This is a question I am often asked, especially as Americans continue to become increasingly aware that something is very wrong with the economy. The difficulty with the way the question is often asked relates to the perception that we are somehow able to divide such issues, or to isolate the cost of war into arbitrarily defined areas such as national security or international relations. War is an all-encompassing governmental activity. The impact of war on our ability to defend ourselves from future attack, and upon America ’s standing in the world, is only a mere fraction of the total overall effect that war has on our nation and the policies of its government.

The Next Step in the Ron Paul Revolution

The Revolution Continues
Dear Supporter,
These past 17 months have been among the most exciting and eventful of my life. Together you and I delivered a message of freedom the likes of which American politics had not seen in decades. I wasn’t sure the country was ready for it. But it was a message, I discovered, that many Americans had been waiting for a long time to hear.
I have been blessed with the most informed, well read, and enthusiastic supporters of any presidential campaign. Your extraordinary efforts in organizing and fundraising grabbed the attention of millions of Americans and shocked just about everyone in politics and the media. I still cannot get over all the fantastic work you did.
Something of great significance has just occurred in our country’s history.
With the primary season now over, the presidential campaign is at an end. But the larger campaign for freedom is just getting started. Therefore, I am happy to announce the official launch of the Ron Paul Campaign for Liberty.
