“The most childish of all the things being said in the august setting of a joint session of Congress last week was that millions of people can be added to the government’s health insurance plan without increasing the federal deficit at all.”

Ron Paul Unplugged: Get Government Out of Health Care

John Stossel Interviews Ron Paul on Youth Appeal, Opposition to Medicare, Medicaid

Over the last few months, I’ve heard from hundreds of viewers who said that I should interview unconventional Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul. So I did.

In our interview, published exclusively on ABCNEWS.com, we talk about the Iraq war, when war is justified, the proper role of government, immigration, drug use, prostitution, gay marriage, and more.

In this segment, we discuss the 72-year-old Texas congressman’s surprising popularity with young people, and then, at greater length, his thoughts on health care. You can watch the full interview here.

This week, maybe today President Bush will be faced with using his veto pen to strike down the expansion of the SCHIP program. Will he come through? I would say no if his previous “compassionate conservative” escapades are any judge. He has already hypocritically denounced the expansion of the SCHIP program as a step down the path to government-run health care for every American but at the same time saying he would agree to an smaller expansion of the program. Is a smaller expansion toward socialism make it not socialism at all? That seems to be the twisted reasoning of “compassionate conservatives” these days.

Fiscally Unsustainable

The current program, which was set to expire on Sept. 30th, has been temporarily refunded while a sinful compromise between the president and the congress proceeds. The SCHIP program, as all entitlement programs are, is fiscally unsustainable. Earlier this year SCHIP faced a shortfall until a $650 million band aid was log rolled into the unrelated Iraq supplemental spending bill (H.R. 2206).
To understand the natural insolvency of SCHIP one only has to look at the funding source which is tobacco taxes. With cigarette use in a decline, tobacco tax revenues have been in a decline and further taxation will only accelerate the decline in revenue.
In a study done by The Heritage Foundation it was concluded that “In just five years, Congress will need over 9 million new smokers. Reauthorizing the program for 2013 to 2017 would require almost 22.4 million new smokers by the end of that period.”
Will all the bleeding hearts who think this is a good program step up to the pump and take up the evil weed for the cause? Not likely. So therefore the funding for SCHIP is doomed to fail by design.
Are Pelosi and her band of commie Democrats and liberal Republicans stupid? There are unquestionably stupid people there, but for the most part “evil” may be a better word to describe their movement. They know damn well it’s unsustainable, that’s their primary attraction to it! They thrive on expansion of the Welfare-State through fiscal crisis, class warfare, and the addiction of more and more people to government handouts. The continued failure of this program will only guarantee a foot in the door for Hillary Care II and its inevitable failure and then onto their goal of full blown health care socialism.

Some may say the function of Universities and college professors as H.L. Mencken put it long ago is “simply to pass on to fresh generations of numskulls a body of so-called knowledge that is fragmentary, unimportant, and, in large part, untrue.” That is certainly truer in modern times with the encroachment of government in education, but still there are some students that defeat the system and the best efforts of leftist professors and manage to survive with their brain intact.
My evidence is one Monica Granger, an economics/political science senior at the University of Houston who unlike the majority of highly educated politicians and media journalists out there understands both the cause of the current health care crisis and the only obvious solution, which is…

Take government out of health care

Monica Granger
Opinion Columnist

The first three articles of this four-part series on health care in America focused on the insurmountable economic and ethical problems posed by socialized, or ‘universal’ healthcare, as political charlatans call it.
We saw how the protectionist medical guild system in the early 1900s was the result of American Medical Association doctors seeking to keep salaries above the decreasing market price subsequent to newly competitive but rapidly developing alternative care options — including homeopathic and herbal remedies — and how it effected a prompt, drastic price increase.
Rather than abolishing the failed cartel system, however, self-serving politicians vilified price-increases as the result of greedy doctors and hospitals and passed more legislation.
Health care as we now know it is intimately tied to insurance markets, but not because it was the best way for health care providers to deliver health care services to consumers.
In fact, health insurance markets (as we know them) are government’s coercive response to the price increases affected by government intervention in the first place.
